The production of the electrical and electronics industry in the country fell 7% in February compared to the same period last year, according to the association representing the sector (Abinee) on Thursday (2).
The manufacturers of Information Technology products (cell phones, computers, among others) were the first to be affected by the coronavirus, due to problems in receiving materials and components from China, when the outbreak was more concentrated in this country.
China is precisely the main source of components in Brazil, with 42% of the total volume. The country is one of the main sellers of chips, integrated circuits and other parts and pieces that will become cell phones, washing machines, televisions and several other electronics in other countries.
The February result was mainly influenced by the 10.6% drop in the production of electronic goods, since the electricity sector registered a more modest decrease (-3.6%).
In the accumulated result for January and February 2020, industrial production in the electrical and electronic sector decreased 1.3%. The result stems from the 3% decrease in the electronic area and the 0.5% increase in the electrical area.
Abinee data showed a reduction in the production of electronic goods, such as: communication equipment (-19.3%), computer goods (-10.5%), audio and video devices (-12.1%) and measurement instruments (-3.4%). On the other hand, the production of electronic components grew 23%.
In the electrical area, the decrease was observed in the production of light bulbs (-13.8%), generators, transformers and motors (-8.7%) of batteries (-7.6%), and other electrical equipment not previously specified (-16.5%), a group in which electrical alarm devices for protection against theft or fire and electrodes, brushes and other articles are classified.
