To generate cash, the second largest US automaker had said last week that it was ready to restart production at some plants in North America from April 6.
On Tuesday, Ford said it had planned to resume production at several major US plants on April 14, but will now do so on dates not yet announced.
"The health and safety of our workforce, dealers, customers, partners and communities remains our top priority," said Kumar Galhotra, Ford's president of North America operations, in a statement.
Still, the automaker will open a factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan, during the week of April 20, which will make respirators to treat patients affected by the coronavirus.
Rival Fiat Chrysler said last week that it plans to resume production in North America on April 13, while General Motors has not released a date to restart its vehicle production.
