Heading for fifth year as Brazil's best-selling car, the Chevrolet Onix was still being questioned to justify its position. After all, even though it was a good product, it did not deliver any major differential compared to competitors.
Your new generation, however, promises to dispense with this charge. Introduced in September, the new Onix is hitting stores now with brand new items, fully revamped mechanics, and competitively priced rivals.

To see if the model will justify the leading position, the G1 has tested the Premier automatic top-of-the-line configuration, starting at $ 69,990. It was equipped with the most complete package, Premier III, which raises the price to $ 72,990.

5 things that only those who have walked in the new Onix know:
- The hatch has unique adjustments to the suspension and steering sedan, which give the model a sportier "feel". However, he may suffer more in holes;
- Model grew, but new dimensions went to the cabin;
- Who goes in the back seat has enough space, without leftovers as in the sedan. Center block bothers who goes in the middle;
- Despite the new engine, fuel consumption has not improved much from the old 1.4. According to the brand, the Onix turbo can make up to 15.1 km / l on the road with gasoline;
- The buttons on the gearshift lever for manual shifting are not practical and intuitive at all. Fins behind the steering wheel would do the job better.

The new Onix has (almost) the same mechanical configuration as Onix Plus, which the G1 has also tried. The reviewed version repeats the 1.0 turbo flex 3-cylinder engine, with 116 horsepower and up to 16.8 kgfm of torque, and the 6-speed automatic transmission.
The set works well and corrects negative points of other 3-cylinder models.
On Onyx, engine noise is heard less loudly, creeping (when an auto car moves “on its own” when the brake foot is released without accelerating) is smooth and the idling vibration is almost imperceptible.
The similarities to the sedan end there. The brand has given the hatch firmer suspension and steering adjustments that translate into a sportier temperament.

Because of this, it has more stability at higher speeds, more agility – with a more direct steering – and holds the body well in curves, even when done with more excitement and in the rain, as it did during its presentation.
Coupled with the new position of the now lower seats, it can be said that the new Onix gives driving pleasure and has similar dynamics to that of Cruze, its much more expensive "brother".
On the other hand, hits can compromise comfort on poor quality asphalt stretches with unevenness and potholes, producing more abrupt shocks.
The hatch accelerates well, but progressively, without “gluing” passengers to the seats. There is no shortage of overtaking or exits, but don't expect amazing performance.
Another feature that diminishes Onix's sporting “footprint” is the way manual gear shifts are made by shifting knobs.
Apart from the slow responses, the system is not intuitive or practical at all. The traditional fins behind the wheel ("paddle shifts" or "butterflies") would do the job better.

On consumption, the new Onix does not show much improvement over the previous one, which had 1.4-liter aspirated four-cylinder engine already in the equivalent versions. Lack of direct injection is one of the factors that hinder efficiency.
According to Chevrolet, the turbo-powered hatchback and automatic gearbox can average 8.3 km / l in the city and 10.7 km / l on the highway when fueled with ethanol. With gasoline, the averages rise to 11.9 and 15.1 km / l, respectively.
In the old generation, it reached 7.9 km / l in the city and 9.7 km / l in ethanol, compared to 11.6 km / l in the city and 14 km / l on the highway with gasoline, according to Inmetro.
Hyundai does not disclose the consumption of Hyundai HB20 turbo, the biggest rival.
At first, Onix innovates in the segment, offering stability and traction controls and 6 airbags in all configurations, from the "cheapest", which costs $ 48,490.
By comparison, its biggest rival, the HB20, only offers 4 standard airbags, even on top of the line versions. Traction and stability controls only appear in the Evolution setting of $ 53,790.

Premier III (R $ 72,990) features luxuries such as a semi-autonomous parking system, digital air conditioning, leather seats, 16-rim wheels, automatic floodlights with projectors, daytime running lights and LED lanterns, and blind spot vehicle alerts .
Also, as in other versions, autopilot, face switch and pushbutton start, ramp start assistant and USB inputs for rear seat occupants.
The model also has a multimedia center with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and OnStar, a remote assistant who can assist in cases of accidents, theft and even finding and making restaurant reservations, and checking the result of a football game, for example. .

Onix can also be equipped with onboard wifi in 4 different packages – the first three months are free to try. Claro's monthly plans of 2GB (R $ 29.99), 5GB (R $ 39,99), 10GB (R $ 59,99) and 20GB (R $ 84,99) are offered.
The state-of-the-art HB20 does not offer wi-fi, daytime running lights, LED flashlights, semi-autonomous parking and blind spot warning, but has automatic braking, warning of unintended lane changes and tire pressure monitoring. So it charges at least $ 77,990 – $ 5,000 more.
Interior is careful, and no room left
The cabin of the Onix Premier is pleasant both in its design and its finish. The panel has pieces that look good and look good, such as creases and variety of textures that show care (although they don't have a soft touch).

In the more expensive version, panel, doors and benches blend black with gray or caramel. It is noteworthy that Chevrolet has not yet released the entry versions of the model for evaluation.
The new generation of Onix has grown 23 inches in length, 3 inches in width and 3 inches in wheelbase, and all growth has been dedicated to the occupants of the vehicle.
The vehicle manual shows a capacity of 291 liters for the hatch, while the fact sheet provided by the brand points to 275. The old generation had 289. The G1 questioned Chevrolet about the differences, but got no response until this issue was published.
Who goes after has no major problems: the space is not enough, but is enough for people about 1.80 m high.

The central block, which houses the USB outputs, bothers to be very pronounced and invade the area that would be the middle occupant.
Even with the arrival of almost the new HB20, Onix shows that it will be easy to stay in the lead. A good look, new equipment in the segment, a larger dealer network and better prices than the competitor are enough.
The fire risk recall that affected all Onix Plus sedan units does not hit the hatch, which will already be delivered to customers with the new engine programming.
In addition, he earned top marks (5 stars) on the Latin NCap crash tests – leaving the first-generation disapproval behind.
